In an exclusive interview with Phil Sandy, a talented DJ and music producer who balances his passion for music with a full-time career as a professional seaman, we explored the depths of his creative journey. Sandy’s latest releases, “Experience of Darkness” and the forthcoming track “Analemma,” showcase his unique ability to blend atmospheric soundscapes with rhythmic intensity, reflecting the duality of his life at sea and in the studio. His commitment to both his craft and profession exemplifies a remarkable work ethic, making him a compelling figure in the music industry.

– How did you begin with music and djing?

I started writing music in 2006. But first, when I was 13 years old, I found the DAW ‘Techno Ejay.’ As a child, I began working as a DJ at my city’s club when I was 16.

– With which labels and artists have you worked on?

I’m working with Stone Face and Terminal, and Greg Downey, on the label Black Hole. They have included my track “Meotide” in the compilation titled “The Art of Skullduggery.

– Any new releases?

My last release, ‘Experience of Darkness,’ and my new release, ‘Analemma’ (pre-save: https://alvedamusic.lnk.to/Analemma ).

– In the studio, what’s your set-up?

I don’t have a special studio, just a notebook, a DAW, and a MIDI keyboard. But my dream for the future is to work in a professional studio. In a studio, I can use my full potential for production.

– Which DAW do you use to produce music?

I’m using Logic Pro X.

– How is an ordinary day like for you?

As you know, I’m a professional seaman, and my job takes up all my time. If I have time, I will start writing music.

– What do you think sets DJing apart from other performing arts?

D.J. works with improvisation and fantasy, as well as other arts, but a DJ as an individual person serves as a mirror.

– How has your musical taste evolved over the years?

My first taste was trance. I liked it very much, but after the commercialization of trance music, I started listening to independent techno music. I also enjoy the darker side of drum and bass, as well as some pop music.

– What is your favourite djing experience?

When I first tried DJ equipment, it was a Pioneer 800 and SDJ 1000. Amazing!))) Also, the first DAW I used was FL Studio.

– What’s been your biggest challenge as a DJ and music producer?

Find independent music from commercial artists.

– Do you have any dreams and plans for the future?

My biggest dream is to start producing music with other DJs and to share my experience with my son, because no one has been there to assist me. I also dream of creating tracks for Betsie Larkin and Jess.

– What do you like to do in your spare time?

In all my spare time, I’m working on music and spending time with my family. They listen to my tracks and give me feedback on where I made mistakes. Does that sound good or not?

– What advice would you give to another DJ and music producer starting out in their career?

My advice is to go to music school, listen to critics, and work hard.
