UK electronic artist Scarper returns with Off-Cuts (2014–2021), an eight-track archive release that transforms unreleased sketches, demos and studio experiments into a richly satisfying journey through emotive techno, playful acid, deep house and forward-thinking electronica.
For an artist whose catalogue has consistently lived between the dancefloor and the headphones, Off-Cuts (2014–2021) is more than a collection of leftovers. It is a carefully assembled document of a particularly inspired creative era — one that produced Scarper’s acclaimed debut album Warmer Squares and the certified club burner, “E-Funk.”
Drawing from a personal archive spanning seven years, Scarper — aka Steve Young — has selected, refined and polished eight previously unheard tracks that sit naturally alongside some of his most celebrated work. The result is a retrospective that feels anything but dated: a warm, colourful and characterful selection of productions driven by classic electronic sensibilities and a distinctly modern edge.
The record opens in dramatic fashion with “Skynet,” where epic, emotive chords immediately set an expansive tone. Elsewhere, “Steppe” injects a more playful energy through bubbling acid lines and irresistible squelches, while “Halocline” reveals Scarper’s gift for melodic composition, pairing gorgeous string arrangements with intricate electronic detail.
Speaking about the project, Scarper explains:
“I realised I had quite a few demos, jams & ideas on my laptop from that period, some of which were decent enough to polish up & get out into the world. It’s a snapshot of where I was musically at the time, so I thought I’d package them together as a retrospective rather than a proper release — giving people something to enjoy while I crack on with the next project.”
That honesty runs throughout Off-Cuts (2014–2021). Rather than presenting a rigidly conceptual album, Scarper invites listeners into the studio — into the moments between releases, the ideas that evolved outside the spotlight, and the tracks that have finally found their time.
Scarper is no stranger to critical recognition. His debut album Warmer Squares was met with widespread acclaim, earning support from electronic music heavyweights including Orbital, Laurent Garnier and Carl Craig. His music has also received radio support across Rinse FM, Sub FM and BBC 6 Music, while outlets such as Mixmag, DJ Mag and XLR8R have championed his work.
Following the continued resurgence of his 2020 single “E-Funk” — now reaching new listeners through a recent physical release — Off-Cuts (2014–2021) arrives as a fitting reminder of Scarper’s enduring creative range.
Releasing almost exclusively through his own Plexus Records imprint, Scarper remains a genuinely independent voice in UK electronic music. Unrestricted by genre, he moves effortlessly between lush melodic soundscapes, raw underground club tools, acid-tinged grooves and atmospheric electronica. His productions balance nostalgia and innovation, honouring the roots of dance music while always looking ahead.
With Off-Cuts (2014–2021), Scarper does not simply revisit the past — he gives it new life.
