Inner City – ‘Reach’ Remixes
(KMS Records)
26th May
Inner City, the group that took Detroit techno to the masses, return with the remix package for their latest single ‘Reach’, out on 26th May via KMS Records.
Exploring the different flavours of ‘Reach’, which marked the group’s latest chapter with another instant dance classic, the package includes remixes from Will Clarke, DJ Minx and Reggie Dokes.
Bristol-based producer and DJ Will Clarke gives the original a disco feel with bouncing piano chords underpinned by a deep house groove. Melding how own dynamic style with Inner City’s soulful sound, Clarke has solidified his place in dance music with releases on esteemed labels such as Trick, Truesoul, Filth on Acid, Kneaded Pains, Drumcode, We Are The Brave, and his own label All We Have Is Now. He says of his remix, “Inner City has been entwined in my life from the start, so when Kevin asked me to remix ‘Reach’ it was an absolute honour! I love the original and I’m really happy with what I’ve done with my version of the track.”
Offering up a more experimental and spaced-out take on ‘Reach’ is deep house and techno producer Reggie Dokes, a prolific artist on underground labels across the U.S. and Europe, as well as label head at Psychostasia Recordings.
Finally, serving up a thumping bass-heavy remix is Detroit’s “First Lady of Wax” DJ Minx, who was recently named as one of MixMag’s ‘20 Women Who Shaped the History of Dance Music’ – and is going strong on Liaison Artists after nearly three decades of DJing.
Formed in 1987 by record producer, composer and international DJ Kevin Saunderson (who with fellow Detroiters Juan Atkins and Derrick May, are renowned as the “The Belleville Three”, the originators of Techno) and vocalist Paris Grey, Inner City are best known for their early crossover hits ‘Big Fun’ and ‘Good Life’. Further successes saw the group topping the US Billboard dance chart five times and securing nine Top 40 hits on the UK singles chart.
The group’s 30th anniversary marked a new chapter for Inner City, one which sees Kevin Saunderson now joined by his son and creative protégé Dantiez as a full-time member. ‘Reach’ will also follow from the well-received collaboration with Idris Elba, ‘No More Looking Back’. The group return with new material and a live show, featuring a variety of musical collaborators and vocalists, premiered at the 2018 Movement Festival which set the stage for Inner City’s new era, working alongside local talent inclusive of vocal sensation, Steffanie Christi’an. With over three decades in the game under Inner City’s wing, a renewed commitment to live performances featuring a strong family core; and two generations of Saunderson men in the studio – Inner City are poised to enjoy the good life as much today as they did in 1987.
Sweetening the legendary Detroit group’s original with three floorfiller reworks from Will Clarke, DJ Minx and Reggie Dokes, Inner City’s remix package for ‘Reach’ proves their latest single’s staying power.
