Hello Lorna James! How are you doing today?

I’m great, thank you for inviting me!

Can you remember what initially drew you to Electronic Music?

I fell in love with Electronic Music as a teenager, I loved rave and Acid House and particularly tracks that were piano driven.

What Artists or Producers would you say have had the most influence on your sound and style?

Chicane and BT both left huge impressions on me in the 90s-2000s. While it’s quite hard for me to hear particular influences in my own music, once I’ve written it people have said they can hear Enya, Enigma and Jean Michelle Jarre, all of which are definitely part of my early musical influences.

Over the years, have you seen any live performances that have been particularly memorable and inspiring to you?

Bonobo puts on a great live performance, and I really love watching Coldplay live.

What DJs and Producers have you been listening to recently? Are there any newcomers to the scene that have interested you?

I’m currently listening to the DJ Dove ‘Truth be Told (Remix Album Part 1)’, I’m also into TEED at the moment and Modera are a duo from Seattle who are definitely going places.

What do you find makes you gravitate towards a track; is there usually a specific element of a track that you take most inspiration from?

For me it’s the goosebumps effect; that could be from a vibe, a chord progression, or an incredible top line.

Sometimes random sources can spark creativity, can you remember a moment when a sound or everyday experience unexpectedly influenced one of your productions?

That happens all the time! In my forthcoming House release ‘Sungazers’ I wanted to find a sound which signified a call to action; something that would grab the listener’s attention – so I sampled the toll of a church bell.

How would you say your musical influences have changed over the years?

Whilst my musical tastes have changed over the years, there are definitely themes that have stayed the same; I have always loved haunting and ethereal sounds, complex and interweaving melodies, soaring strings and close piano chords.

What are your favourite genres outside of Electronic Dance Music?

I love to listen to movie soundtracks, Classical music from the romantic era, and ethereal female vocal chillout tracks.

How much of your sound is influenced by other experiences outside of music, if at all?

I would say most of my music originates from experiences outside music! I could have a conversation; see something in my daily life; read something or watch a movie – the common factor is that whatever I have witnessed translates into a feeling which I then use as the inspiration for the music.

With such a diverse variation of inspirations, it is no wonder that Lorna James’ music continually appears original and unique; a distinctive expression of her musical experiences and background, Lorna James has developed a sonic identity that is surely worthy of attention.
