Belgian producer Peter Hulsmans takes center stage in an EDM Cave exclusive! Fresh off his thrilling single “Absolute” on Alveda Music — now cracking Beatport’s Top 100 Trance.
– How did you begin with music and djing?
My passion for music production ignited in 2010. Growing up in the 80s, I was enthralled by electronic synthpop music, which has profoundly shaped my musical style.
Throughout my years in music production, I’ve never DJ’d, simply because I lack the time. Composing music has always been a hobby. My motivations for creating music stem from art, not business. I don’t release music with the expectation that it will boost my DJ career, so I don’t have to write within specific constraints.
– With which labels and artists have you worked on?
Most of my releases were with Recoverworld (Discover Records), and I’ve also worked on remixes of Moonbeam and Solarstone for Black Hole Recordings. While I’d love to collaborate with other artists, my musical career has been largely hobby-based, so I haven’t taken the opportunity to explore other creative avenues.
– Any new releases?
My latest release, titled ‘Principle’, was released on Pure Trance (Solarstone’s label). I took a break from my musical hobby in the past few years but returned to my passion last summer. Inspired by some 80s electronic releases, ‘Principle’ came to life, and I was thrilled to see it released on Pure Trance in December 2025.
– In the studio, what’s your set-up?
My studio setup is quite straightforward. I have a Mac Studio, Yamaha monitors, and a standard MIDI keyboard.
– Which DAW do you use to produce music?
Since the beginning of my musical journey, Logic Pro has been my constant and reliable companion.
– How is an ordinary day like for you?
My ordinary day revolves around my daytime job, and in the late evening, I dedicate time to working on my music in Logic Pro until late at night or the next morning.
– What do you think sets DJing apart from other performing arts?
A DJ’s ability to seamlessly blend a diverse array of tracks creates a cohesive musical experience for the audience, transforming a collection of individual songs into a unified performance crafted by multiple artists.
– How has your musical taste evolved over the years?
My musical taste has always been in electronic dance music. Since my youth in the 80s, I’ve been captivated by the rise of techno, house, and trance from the late 80s into the 90s and 2000s. These genres have always been driven by my love for strong basslines and catchy leads. Over time, I’ve found a sound that I’m incredibly happy with, and my latest release, ‘Absolute,’ embodies that mix.
– What’s been your biggest challenge as a DJ and music producer?
My biggest challenge in my musical career is that I only produce music and don’t actively promote myself as a DJ who also releases tracks. This makes it extremely difficult to gain traction in the industry. First, I need to capture the attention of labels to release my tracks. Second, if they sign me, I need to generate sufficient streams and sales, even without me DJing.
– Do you have any dreams and plans for the future?
I have many dreams and plans for my future, but not all of them are musically based. For my music, I’d love to finalize another album. I’m also planning to reinvent some of my previous work with a new sound, giving them a chance to be heard again.
– What do you like to do in your spare time?
I spend most of my free time with my wonderful daughter and family. Outside of that, I enjoy other forms of entertainment like movies and traveling.
– What advice would you give to another DJ and music producer starting out in her career?
Be patient and always finish your tracks. If you need to, start over and reimagine your track!
