A Glimpse Into the Evolving Sound of Synthesis

Share

In this interview, Synthesis offers a revealing look into the inspirations, techniques, and moments that define the project’s creative process. From a deep love for vinyl and Disco to behind-the-scenes insights into studio work and collaboration, the conversation uncovers what drives the music of this project forward. Whether it’s experimenting with hardware, tweaking presets, or reflecting on memorable musical journeys like Blackpool, this interview highlights the unique elements that continue to bring the Synthesis sound to life.

Vinyl or Digital – Which reigns supreme for you?

Vinyl without a doubt. The sound is much warmer with vinyl and music has a much more emotional quality too on a vinyl record played on a turntable.

Disco or House – What’s closer to your heart?

D.I.S.C.O obviously! There would be no House without Disco and in any case the two genres will be eternally intertwined! If you take September by Earth Wind And Fire, for example, it will storm any dancefloor even today.

Studio Session or Live Performance – Where do you thrive?

Err… I am not a great live musician so it would have to be studio sessions for me unfortunately. Being a fantastic live musician actually does not make a person a more ‘talented’ musician. All the great bands in the world (Beatles, Stones) actually featured quite average musicians in terms of playing ability.

Throwback Classics or Fresh Originals – What gets the crowd moving?

The original versions are always the best versions, unless you take a sample and take it to completely another level like Daft Punk did in the past, or use a unique or rare sample that nobody has really heard before and introduce it to a new audience with current production values.

Synths or Samples – Your go – to for creative spark?

The thing is, samples are easy to work with and, as with any great sample, the creative spark is easy to tap into if your idea is strong enough or unique enough. Obviously, there is going to be a problem creatively (and legally!) if you are going to sample a song that is an absolute classic, so personally I try to leave them untouched.

Hardware or Software – What drives your production process?

I work in a studio with an amazing engineer / producer who is also a guitar genius, so there’s lots of hardware around. I do find myself increasingly adding ‘live’ recordings of instruments that I would have in the past simply programmed. This is especially the case with basslines that are now actually played live on quite a lot of my tracks.

Preset Tweaks or Custom Sound Design – How do you shape your signature sound?

Well, I have to admit a certain amount of laziness here and I do mainly go for presets. Also, it is a bit of a downer when you try to work on getting the exact sound that is ‘in your head’ for too long. Sometimes the frustration makes you a lot less creative, definitely.

Ibiza or Blackpool – Which destination has a special place in your journey?

Ah…it has to be Blackpool, without a doubt, because I do believe that it is the last place that I actually did a live PA back in the day, having crossed the Peak District with my musical partner in the middle of a winter blizzard to get there.

Late – Night Production or Early Morning Inspiration – When does creativity strike?

I am not a morning person so it has to be early evening though not too late as I find that working too late in to the night can sometimes lead to musical adventures that basically sound rubbish in the cold light of day.

Collaboration or Solo Work – Which brings out your best music?

It has to be collaboration as far as I am concerned. I am particularly lucky because my producer Marcin is a musical genius who has a particular talent for engineering and production. I also work with an amazing singer, Nana Genesis who has a huge vocal range and can work out harmonies in an instant.

Through this interview, Synthesis showcases the blend of nostalgia, creativity, and forward-thinking techniques that drive the project. From studio processes to unexpected inspirations, it is clear that Synthesis thrives on collaboration, innovation, and a deep connection to music’s timeless qualities. So, with our conversation drawing to a close, we look forward to following the journey of Synthesis along, excited to see where it will lead and the music sure to be offered soon.
