Chilsta Talks Summer Energy, New Music, and Creative Focus After His Return to Shanghai

As the summer continues to heat up, we caught up with South African-born, Shanghai-based Producer and DJ, Chilsta, to get a sense of where his creative headspace is this season. Fresh off a relocation back to Shanghai, he’s finding new energy in his surroundings, channelling his focus into both music and beyond. Known for blending Techno, House, and Afro House with the rhythms of his heritage, Chilsta continues to refine his approach, so we’re excited to sit down to learn more about how the summer is influencing his current direction, what tracks are on rotation, and how he’s balancing long-term goals with new inspirations.

Hi Chilsta! How’s your summer shaping up so far?

It’s pretty good so far! I just relocated back to Shanghai – the city is super vibrant!

In one word, how would you describe the energy you’re bringing into your creativity this season?

I would say mellow. I’m focusing a lot on my long-term goals in music and other stuff that I work on. I’m at the stage where I just need to put my head down and work hard for future results.

Do you find that the summer months influence your sound or production style in any specific ways?

I guess I like to make happier music during the summer months. That’s just the vibe everywhere you go outside; the mood for everyone is just better!

Are there any shows, gigs, or festivals this summer that you’re especially looking forward to?

I’m not sure, since I just moved back to Shanghai. I’m still arranging my life together, haha. Y’know how relocation can be? Especially when moving across the world, it can be difficult.

Can you share any upcoming tracks or projects you’re hoping to release during the season?

I’m looking to release more Afro House records with my own unique twist. I’m going to be around for a while, so I’m not just banking on this summer…we’ve still got a bright future ahead!

Is there a summer anthem – from your own catalogue or another artist – that’s been on heavy rotation for you lately?

Black Coffee’s track with Jimi Jules, ‘Trippy Yeah’. I think that’s a legacy track. Innervisions is a top label. That’s the avant-garde of Electronic Music.

What’s been inspiring you creatively this summer – any people, places, or sounds fueling your ideas?

Really, just joking and hanging out with my friends. Also, Shanghai is a very inspiring city. It’s futuristic and has amazing architecture, which is perfect for Electronic Music because it’s technology-based.

If you could play any dream summer venue or festival, where would it be and why?

Festival-wise – 100% Tomorrowland (that’s a childhood dream) and for venues, I’d say Ushuaia and DC-10.

As the season unfolds, what are you hoping to explore or achieve creatively in the months ahead?

I’ll be finishing and releasing a track for the summer, and hopefully it gets signed to a good record label.

Also, I’m busy launching a fashion technology startup (just the minimum viable product), called SuitUp, where we allow users to purchase tailored suits by just uploading their body photos. Then, the AI and 3D bodyscanner will scale the user’s body into accurate body measurements for tailored clothing, and your garment will be delivered to your door, anywhere in the world.

Basically, I’m just working on my passions – Music, Fashion and Technology. It all goes hand-in-hand, really.

Lastly, what’s your favourite thing about summer – on or off the dancefloor?

Everything is just so vibrant. Everyone’s in a good mood. You can take vacations. On the dancefloor, everyone is letting loose. Even if they’re still working, it’s too hot and relaxing to take life too seriously, so the energy is better on the dancefloor. The crowds are less stiff.

As we wrap up our interview with Chilsta, we thank him for his time and for sharing insight into his vision and goals for the future. Still at the early stages of his journey, the road ahead points to a Producer and DJ driven by passion, determination, and a strong creative focus – poised to keep pushing forward with intent and drive. So, be sure to follow his movements across social media to stay updated on new releases, projects, and performances.
