EDM Cave - From the Dancefloor to the Studio: An Interview with DRK DREAMZ

Emerging from the underground scene of Boise and shaped by pivotal moments in San Francisco, DRK DREAMZ have built their journey on passion, persistence, and an unshakable connection to music and community. What began as a desire to be closer to the scene quickly evolved into a hands-on career—throwing events, DJing, and eventually stepping into music production to fully express their artistic identity.

Blending influences from early electronic pioneers like The Crystal Method with a modern love for dark, deep dubstep and halftime, the duo continues to carve out a distinct sonic path. With a steady stream of new releases and an authentic, relationship-driven creative process, DRK DREAMZ represent a refreshing take on what it means to grow organically in today’s electronic music landscape.

In this interview, they open up about their beginnings, creative philosophy, challenges, and the mindset that keeps them moving forward.

How did you begin with music and DJing?

We started DJing in 2011 when we began going to shows in Boise. We both felt a strong urge to be more involved in the scene, so we started bringing in talent, throwing events, and DJing for other promoters.

In 2014, we played a show in San Francisco, and that’s when we realized we needed to start producing to be truly valued as artists.

Which labels and artists have you worked with?

We’ve thrown hundreds of events and worked with a huge range of artists, both underground and mainstream. There’s also been some ghost production on the hip-hop side for a larger artist, but aside from remixes, we’ve kept most of our catalog between the two of us.

Any new releases?

We’re currently releasing one track per week leading up to our upcoming EP under our new project. Our next release, “Sinnerz,” drops June 1.

What’s your current studio setup?

We work on Focal monitors along with a collection of hardware synths, including two from Moog (the Matriarch and Sub37) and a DSI Prophet.

Which DAW do you use?

We use Ableton for almost everything.

What does an ordinary day look like for you?

We both work full-time in our own businesses—being self-employed means long days—so music production usually happens at night. We aim for at least an hour of writing each day and several more on weekends.

We also prioritize intentional time together. When our relationship is in sync, the music flows.

What sets DJing apart from other performing arts?

For us, it’s the community. We thrive on connection—how the crowd feels and how supportive the DJ/producer community is. That synergy is everything.

How has your musical taste evolved over the years?

We started out listening to artists like The Crystal Method and Stanton Warriors. Over time, we gravitated toward darker, deeper dubstep and halftime.

What has been your favorite DJing experience?

Playing a Burning Man Decompression in 2012. If you were there… you already know why. 😉

What’s been your biggest challenge as DJs and producers?

At one point, we had to step away for a few years to focus on building stable “adult” income. The pressure of “making it” can really hinder creativity.

Now that we aren’t dependent on music for financial survival, we’re free to write what we genuinely love—and stay fully dedicated to the craft.

Do you have any dreams or plans for the future?

Honestly? Just looking into each other’s eyes under the stars… with a Funktion-One nearby. 🙂

What do you like to do in your spare time?

We love spending time together and hanging out with our giant mastiffs.

What advice would you give to a new DJ or music producer starting out?

Don’t get stuck in the 16-bar loop. Write until you feel done, release it, and move on to the next track. The more you write and release, the better you’ll get.

Don’t chase the “perfect track”—it doesn’t exist, and everyone’s idea of perfect is different.

Spend more time on your mixdown, and when it’s done, bounce every chain to audio so you stop tweaking the sound.
