Mentum, you are the DJ/producer duo rising out of Norway onto the global dance circuit right now. Please introduce yourselves.
Hey! We’re Mentum, a duo from Norway consisting of Tim and Finn. We’ve been living and breathing music together for a decade now. We’ve spent the last few years really honing our craft behind the scenes, writing and producing for other DJs and artists. Our hearts have always been in our own project, and we’re finally at a place where we’ve found a sound that feels much more intentional, a balance that actually represents us.
Your sound blends emotional depth with high-energy production. How has your artistic identity evolved since your early releases, and what influences are currently inspiring you the most?
In the beginning, we were exploring everything from Pop, R&B, and Electronic music with urban influences. But over the last few years, we’ve gravitated toward more EDM, Dance and House music, working with a lot of other DJs and artists in the scene. Now we’re more focused on club functional music that we actually can play in our sets, but trying to blend that with vocals that speaks to / moves the listeners.
We’re really inspired by that 2008–2011 “peak-time” era – the energy of guys like Axwell or David Tort – but mixed with the modern, deeper textures of acts like Tinlicker or Adriatique. Going forward, we’ll work on finding that sweet spot between that club and mainstage euphoria with a deep, emotional approach.
Let’s talk about your new single ‘Breathe.’ What was the initial spark behind the record, and what story or feeling were you aiming to capture?
Tim: ‘Breathe’ was really about that moment of transition. We wanted to create something that felt like a bridge – moving from our past work into this more club-focused, standalone brand. Finn: Conceptually, it’s about that feeling of release. After being so deep in the studio writing for others, ‘Breathe’ was us taking a breath for ourselves. It captures that duality of a heavy, driving beat paired with a vocal that feels like it’s floating.
Can you walk us through the creative process, from the first idea to the final master?
It usually starts with inspiration from a sample or something we hear or a specific melodic hook. For this one, we wanted a record that had a type of energy that could work for a peak-time club set. We’ve become a bit of a “one-stop-shop” over the years, and we do mostly everything in-house for our project.
If you could describe ‘Breathe’ in three words that define this phase of Mentum, what would they be, and why?
Raw, because we’re stripping away the unnecessary and focusing on the energy. Hypnotic, because we want people to lose themselves in the groove. And Synergy, because that’s what happens when we combine our two different musical backgrounds into one vision.
How does Breathe translate into your live sets? Have you tested it out in front of a crowd yet, and what has the reaction been like?
We’ve been testing it out, and the reaction has been incredible. It’s one of those tracks that changes the atmosphere of the room. It’s built for the “moment.” When the drop hits after the distinct buildup, you can see people’s energy just shift. It’s been a staple in our sets recently, and seeing the crowd connect with it is the best validation we could ask for.
This year it will be ten years you guys have been collaborating together under the name Mentum, how do you plan to celebrate?
Tim: It’s crazy to think it’s been ten years. We’ve grown up in this industry together. Finn: Honestly, the best way to celebrate is by being independent and putting out the music we’re most proud of. We’re focused on the live side this year – creating music we love to play out and perform, and booking more gigs internationally is what we’re aiming for this year. Maybe a few special shows to mark the decade!
Looking ahead, what can EDM Cave readers expect next from Mentum. More singles in the same vein as ‘Breathe,’ collaborations, or any upcoming events?
Finn: You can definitely expect more in that melodic and atmospheric direction, but wrapped in a club-oriented framework. Tim: We have a lot of new music that we’re so hyped to share. We’re also really excited about some upcoming shows that we’ll announce soon.
2026 is all about celebrating ten years by making the most authentic music we’ve ever released and seeing where this new sound can take us.
