(KMS Records)
Inner City, the group that took Detroit techno to the masses, are back with their stirring new single ‘Reach’, out on 12th May via KMS Records.
Epitomising Inner City’s soulful and uplifting techno sound, ‘Reach’ arrives on a wave of deep rolling grooves and sweet melodic piano. Centred around a powerful lead vocal from Steffanie Christi’an, the track is a call for unity on the dancefloor. “If you dig down deeper / you can reach me this way” goes the rousing gospel-inspired chorus, erupting in a collectively feelgood spirit. The single also features Ann Saunderson who worked the vocal production on the song, while she also featured on the background vocals with her and Kevin Saunderson‘s youngest son Diaz Saunderson.
Formed in 1987 by record producer, composer and international DJ Kevin Saunderson (who with fellow Detroiters Juan Atkins and Derrick May, are renowned as the “The Belleville Three”, the originators of Techno) and vocalist Paris Grey, Inner City are best known for their early crossover hits ‘Big Fun’ and ‘Good Life’. Further successes saw the group topping the US Billboard dance chart five times and securing nine Top 40 hits on the UK singles chart.
The group’s 30th anniversary marked a new chapter for Inner City, one which sees Kevin Saunderson now joined by his son and creative protégé Dantiez as a full-time member. ‘Reach’ will also follow from the well-received collaboration with Idris Elba, ‘No More Looking Back’. The group return with new material and a live show, featuring a variety of musical collaborators and vocalists, premiered at the 2018 Movement Festival which set the stage for Inner City’s new era, working alongside local talent inclusive of vocal sensation, Steffanie Christi’an. With over three decades in the game under Inner City’s wing, a renewed commitment to live performances featuring a strong family core; and two generations of Saunderson men in the studio – Inner City are poised to enjoy the good life as much today as they did in 1987.
Marking the group’s latest chapterwith anotherinstant classic, ‘Reach’ proves that Inner City’s power to unite people around the power of dance music is as vital as ever.
