Rising newcomer Paul Schmidpeter lands on Elif’s tastemaking Marginalia label with his ‘Is That All?’ EP while Murat Uncuoglu steps up to remix.
Schmidpeter is an artist whose creative process involves a multifaceted fusion of electronic sounds, experimental samples, and a preference for analog synthesisers. Inspired by the pulsating music scene of the 1980s and the present, Paul creates a distinctive sound that blurs genre boundaries. Utilising both digital and analog sound generators, he crafts tracks that are simultaneously futuristic and nostalgic, combining abstract textures with rhythmic fragments. He has featured on various successful labels and has performed in renowned clubs and festivals including Mahagoni Festival, Ebbe & Flut Festival, supporting Anja Schneider and more. His energetic and dynamic sets skillfully blend different styles and moods, guiding the audience through his creative world and aiming to transcend boundaries.
Opener to the EP ‘Is This All?’ is a deep rolling techno cut rich in atmosphere. The subtle chords bring a sense of paranoia as wispy pads then break out of the mix to bring energy and colour. Add in some heavy hits and kicks and smudged vocal effects and you have a trippy late night classic. ‘No More Words’ is another stylish cut with an immersive atmosphere, this time though with more epic cosmic synths taking you into another dimension as they arc up through the skies and the textured drums lock you in down low.
Meanwhile, remixer Murat Uncuoglu has a love for music and technology that took him to study sound engineering and production at Londonʼs Media Productions. At night, he conducted field research in Londonʼs legendary clubs and with fellow DJ-producer Alican he runs label and events company Isolate which features their own tracks, tracks from the hottest artists in Turkey and around the globe, and tracks by respectable artists in the dance scene, while he has also released on Isolate, Innervisions, Afterlife and Multinotes. His version of ‘No More Words’ brings more immediate drive with crisp tech house drums and extra drama in the synths. It’s an involving cut that takes you on a real rollercoaster.
This is another standout package of innovative new sounds from the essential Marginalia imprint.
