Share

Succession” is a new collaborative release by Christian Smith partnering with Drunken Kong, and their pounding techno track has received remix treatment from Cesar Almena and Nuke.

Cesar Almena and Nuke are the artists behind CODE Records which is releasing Succession, and their label is linked to their CODE event series that runs at the Fabrik nightclub in Madrid.

CODE events have massive line-ups including some of the world’s most prestigious DJs, and their record label has a similar ethos. Christian Smith and Drunken Kong are two highly respected techno artists from the peak time scene, and they have previously worked on music released by Tronic.

Tronic is Christian Smith’s own record label and it’s been running since the ‘90s. Not only has Christian Smith released on his own label, but he has also featured on other genre-defining imprints such as Drumcode. Drunken Kong are a duo who have also featured on Drumcode alongside other very respected record labels like Terminal M and KD RAW.

Both residents at the CODE events, Cesar Almena and Nuke are well-respected DJs. Cesar Almena has also produced music for A.Paul’s Naked Lunch, and Nuke has featured on music on labels including Arjun Vagale and Ramiro Lopez’s Odd Recordings, and Marco Bailey’s MB Elektronics.

First on the release is the original mix of Succession which has industrial percussion and an in-your-face synth line that swells with tension as the track unfolds with the help of breakbeat drops, punishing claps, and thrashing high-end percussion. Cesar Almena’s remix switches the original’s 4/4 groove for broken kick patterns and adds ominous atmospherics that give it a dystopian vibe. Nuke closes out the release with a hypnotic rework that orientates around his own synth line and claps from the original.

All three tracks on this release are expertly produced, and it spans a full range peak time techno style.
