Now a decade into his career and in the form of his life, Rony Rex is back with his latest potent dance floor bomb ‘Limbo’ featuring US lyricist, Dances With White Girls on Finnish indie Youth Control. Rony Rex who first cut his teeth as a dynamic DJ, is now an established, innovative producer on the world stage. As one of Finland’s hottest tastemakers hosting a show on the influential station YLEX (the Finnish BBC 1 equivalent), his style oozes with bubbly, quirky and housey influences, is heavily club focused, and can’t help but flirt with pop and indie soundscapes.
A catalogue of successful and off-the-wall releases sit under Rony’s belt on labels such as Youth Control and Needwant. ‘Milk It’ featuring hit songwriter Carla Monroe was a hit on the Billboard Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart, playlisted on Diplo’s Revolution on SiriusXM and had massive sync success with brands including Yves Saint Laurent, Nickelodeon and O2. ‘Mona Lisa’ was another sync hit with Stella McCartney, while ‘Fucked It Up’ (Gas Gas Remix) was huge in China with over 80 million streams via the nation’s Netease streaming platform.
Rony – who once tried Limbo but also almost died – described how the new single came about;
“I was asked by Smalltown DJs to remix a song by them featuring Dances back in 2019 for Fools Gold. The remix was never released, but I’ve used it as a weapon in my sets – kills every time. So, a few years later, I thought it was time to get him on an original. We had a good chat about rules in dance music and why it’s important to fuck around with them. I sent him some stuff, the energy was there, and Limbo instantly happened”
This vital single features the vocals of Dances With White Girls – a now LA-based artist who is no stranger to appearing on festival sized summer anthems. His style is inspired by the Philly club sound of his hometown as well as house, hip hop and techno and has come on the revered likes of Dirtybird, Fools Gold and Mad Decent, both solo and alongside stars like Pitbull and Chris Lake, Huxley and Walker & Royce.
The excellent ‘Limbo’ is indeed a characterful track with lashings of big bass energy. The percussion is heavy and prickly and the chopped-up vocals bring wildness to the grooves. It’s the sort of track that cannot fail to blow up any dance floor.
Youth Control is one of Finland’s leading independent dance music labels. It is a real breeding ground for new talent and a home to big names like Roisto, Disco Despair, Per2, founders TJH87 and Terminé. It is also a publisher and party brand that has turned the heads of tastemakers like Armand Van Helden, Steve Aoki and Todd Edwards, plus BBC Radio 1, Billboard and Kiss FM. This is the latest in a hot run of new singles that have reached new highs for Youth Control.
